Tierra Nueva Project (Burlington, Washington)

By Harold Neufeldt

Coordinating the efforts of and working with two volunteer groups at Tierra Nueva was a rich experience. The Mennonite Youth Venture came in July full of energy and life and a group of Mennonite Disaster Service friends came in December along with Larry McCann to provide much needed plumbing and electrical expertise gave new life to the Burlington outreach center of Tierra Nueva. Besides taking on a good number of projects the groups get an opportunity to learn about the mission of Tierra Nueva to the marginalized in the Skagit Valley through worshipping together at the center and interacting with migrants at the camps.

While playing soccer and having meals together with the Tierra Nueva staff and volunteers we learn about their tremendous love and caring they have for the people that come to them for assistance. While they commented on how we giving them the encouragement to continue the outreach God has placed before them.
